The Green Dot sustainability report was developed by Heisters & Partner for the Dual System Germany and places the question of individual responsibility in the context of society, the environment and resources at the heart of its conception. The report does not just focus on citizens and consumers, but also sheds light on the responsibility of industry. Together with representatives of the Dual System, the idea of developing a credible report that dispenses with advertising elements was at the heart of the initial discussions. Our idea was to let citizens ask open questions about individual responsibility and thus create a forum for a broader discussion. In order to give this idea a credible and real background, we looked for a place – a house where all the testimonials met for two days and discussed responsibility and sustainability with representatives of the company and us designers. The excellent Swiss photographer Franziska Messner-Rast took the impressive portraits during the discussions. The questions formulated by the testimonials, which accompany the portraits in the report, are all authentic and were part of the discussion. As a counterbalance to these open questions from the area of citizenship, a panel of experts from the area of corporate and science was set up, which also discussed the responsibility of the individual and the role of industry in particular. Journalists, economists, ethicists and sociologists were invited to ensure a broad discourse. This panel was also documented by the photographer.
Financial Report
The report was recognized as one of the best sustainability reports in Germany and received numerous awards for its open debate culture. Since the Dual System Germany is ultimately a non-profit company, it was possible to create a forum for the exchange of ideas in accordance with the client's wishes. The aim of the communication was not to spread a specific view of things, but rather to convey the message that one is at the heart of society and part of a democratic dialogue.
The typography of the simple and factual report is characterized by Robert Slimbach's Minion. The images were printed as quatroplexes of four gray Pantone true colors on natural paper, which reinforces the timeless character of Franziska Messner Rast's hand-printed photographs on baryta paper – one almost thinks the images were reproduced using copperplate intaglio printing. The tables and graphics are linear and are deliberately based on a minimalist aesthetic that dispenses with specific branding and focuses on the factual transmission of information. The question of the specific attitude of the representatives and employees of the Dual System itself finds its answer in the title of the report.
The people photographed from above are all employees of the company. They are on the same level as the citizens and are part of the social dialogue.
