Buzzi Unicem Annual Report:
The 2009 annual report of Buzzi Unicem SpA was developed as a single financial and sustainability report and, in blue and green, each highlights a different aspect of the development of one of the leading international cement and concrete manufacturers. The financial report focuses on the fiscal and business aspects of selected investments by the group and defines and explains topics such as the depth of added value, increased efficiency and potential savings. The building materials company's sustainability report, in green, also focuses on the environmental and sustainability aspects of the corresponding projects and focuses on their long-term perspective and the company's responsible actions. Important stakeholder demands are addressed here and explained from the management's point of view, taking into account pros and cons. However, since the projects presented in the blue annual report also have far-reaching consequences and require responsible action in which all stakeholders must be taken into account, the reports are presented in a parallel design: they are the same projects, only the color and the thematic focus distinguish them. Buzzi Unicem's annual and sustainability report represents a step towards an integrated report that understands all of the group's activities as sustainable and adequately takes into account not only the capital within the company but also those outside it.
Annual Report
In addition to the clear and concise typography and the overall design, photography naturally plays an important role in both reports. In order to supplement existing image material and to realize missing motifs, the Hamburg photographer Uwe Aufderheide was commissioned to photograph the individual projects. A 400 ASA black and white grain was used, which was applied to all motifs and gave the images a material-sensitive impression of the materiality of the raw materials of cement and concrete. The transparent overprinting and underprinting of the grainy black and white images was carried out with pure special colors on an open natural paper.

In the rest of the report, a good structure, a good orientation system and optimal readability of texts, tables and information graphics were the most important design parameters. The design team opted for a system font in order to meet all the challenges of the reading sections, the tables and the various formatting. Because the reports were published in parallel in three languages and countries (Italy, USA and Germany), it was important to develop a stable digital workflow that linked the individual versions together and made the workflow economical and manageable in terms of time.
Through direct contact with those responsible, a coherent path to a holistic view of this sustainably managed company emerged. The reports were awarded the red dot, the DDC Award and a top spot in the manager magazine annual report ranking.
