Diocese of Eichstätt:
The path of the transparency offensive continues

With the 2019 financial report, the Diocese of Eichstätt is continuing its transparency offensive. The annual financial statements not only reveal the diocese's finances again, but also show that structures and processes are changing. Under the motto »Creating sustainable transparency,« the report describes the diocese's economic activities and investments in various fields of activity.

Financial Report

The report is part of a proactive transparency campaign that Eichstätt Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke initiated in 2015, when he commissioned the diocese to present its assets in accordance with commercial law principles. In May 2016, auditors found financial investments that led to intensive inquiries: These were 31 loans that had been granted to US project companies in the area of real estate development. The diocese writes: »It is about restoring lost trust as far as possible.«

In 2018, the Diocese of Eichstätt commissioned Heisters & Partner to develop, design and create a comprehensive financial report that, for the first time, presented the assets of the diocese and its bodies in accordance with the rules of the German Commercial Code (HGB), thus making them comparable and assessable.

The stories in the report convey the effects of the structural reform within the church and allow the people involved to have their say: authentically and realistically. The reports are supported by a straightforward, clear and sensitive layout as well as by sensitive photography, which, from a single source, convincingly supports the consistency and credibility of the stories.

The image section traces the targeted investment in two specific areas of pastoral care and conveys the contribution that people in the diocese make to shaping future development. In the area of continuing education and training for pastors, Bettina-Sophia Karwath is introduced and the reader accompanies her in her commitment to the personal development of pastors. The continuing education courses for pastoral staff in the Diocese of Eichstätt are about recognizing conflicts and tackling them constructively.

Another example in the report shows the work of the non-profit Kita gGmbH, which bundles the administration of the community kindergartens and thus relieves the burden on local pastors. The annual report clearly describes the idea of uniting the management of the church daycare centers in a large association under the umbrella of the diocese.

The design of the report in 2019 is also based on a minimalist and clear approach. Yellow chapter separator pages in the main color of the diocese give the report a clear structure.

The font used was »Barock Antiqua Compatil Exquisit« in combination with the functional type »DIN«. The focus of the communication concept is the dialogue with the most important players in the transparency campaign and the effects of the structural reforms on the ground in the communities and institutions.
